How You Can Stay Hydrated While Hiking
Going for a hike or walk, out on in the woods, on the beach, or in the mountains?
The
most critical part of staying healthy is staying hydrated. Water gives
our bodies energy, carries nutrients across our systems, and ensures
that we arrive at our destination safely and in the best health.
When
hiking, it’s always important to bring a water supply – here are some
tips on how to make sure you’re properly taken care of.
- Fill Up Before You Go
Just like you fill up the gas tank in your car, make sure that you’re properly equipped with sports water bottles and that they’re filled.
Even
if you know of a nearby stream or lake where you can refill on the way,
it’s always best to have a full supply when you leave – In nature,
things can change all of a sudden, and you never know if, because of an
accident that you can’t make it to the stream, or for some reason the
stream’s water becomes polluted, that you may not be able to fill up
your supply.
- Carry More Than You’ll Need
Normally for people traveling, I advise them to bring less – less equipment, less clothing, less supplies.
Too many times, we over pack and pay the price by hauling more weight and taking more time to organize.
There are a few exceptions to this, however, and water is one of the most important.
Even around the house, I always have a few extra sports water bottles to be able to simply better manage the washing cycles.
Have more water on board than you’ll need for your trip, and you’ll have a better safety cushion in the event of an emergency.
- Purify?
Purification is a big question, and the answer revolves around where you’ll be traveling.
You
should always carry iodine tablets, however use them only if you think
it is necessary (also find out if you’re allergic beforehand instead of
the hard way!)
A portable water filter can be worthwhile investment for multiple-day trips.
- Bring soap
Washing out your sports water bottles is a good way to ensure that they keep you clean and healthy.
Bringing washing supplies along will help you scrub any bacteria and dirt out of your containers.

Are you staying properly hydrated?
On hot days and year round, hydration is essential to staying healthy.
Here are some quick tips to ensure that you’re properly hydrated.
- When should you be drinking water?
Any time you’re thirsty! (as the quick answer)
Thirst is your body’s way of telling you that you need water. Not
listening to your body’s reaction is a quick way to become dehydrated.
There are other symptoms of being thirsty, as well.
Feeling dizzy or disoriented can be a sign that you’re lacking fluids.
Often this is accompanied by headaches or nausea.
If your urine appears dark or has a strong odor, that can also be a sign that you’re not receiving the proper level of fluids.
- How can you drink water more often?
Carry sports water bottles. These will allow you to have water at home or on the road.
Personally, I keep a number of them around the house – this makes it
easier at time when I need to wash or clean one, and I’m never lacking
a water container.
Keep a cold pitcher of water in the fridge. This way you’ll always have cold water ready.
Supplement water with a proper diet consisting of vegetables and
fruits. These foods will help keep you properly hydrated through the
day.
- What to look for in sports water bottles?
Focus on your needs as well as where you’ll be using your sports water bottles.
Personally, I prefer to use Stainless Steel or Aluminum Sports Water Bottles - even for athletic events.
Plastic bottles are almost as rigid as stainless steel, and no longer offer a “squish factor” if you fall on them.
As well, many manufacturers of Stainless Steel and Aluminum Sports
Water Bottles now offer different tops and caps for different sports
occasions.
Before making a purchase, focus on your needs and your lifestyle
choices – this will help you determine the right set of sports water
bottles for you.
