Choosing the right Sports Water Bottles

Choosing the right sports water bottles is a critical decision.

A balance between cost and effectiveness, here is a summary of the different types.

- Plastic / Polycarbonate

Plastic / Polycarbonate reusable water bottles are a familiar sight at gyms and with hikers. These sports water bottles are known to be portable and easy to clean, and can be brought almost anywhere.

There has been, in recent news evidence that BPA (Bisphenol A), a harmful chemical can leach out of these bottles, causing prostate cancer, and increase estrogen levels.

Some athletes prefer these under the belief that they have a little more “give” when playing rugged sports, however most metal sports water bottles are fairly dent resistant, and some (like Klean Kanteen) have sport tops to ensure that you don’t crack your teeth against a metal.

- Stainless Steel

In my opinion, Stainless Steel is the best option for Sports Water Bottle. I’m personally a fan of the Klean Kanteen line.

Stainless steel is a great as it prevents the taste of different liquids permanently staying in the bottle (so you don’t get the taste of juice when you’re drinking water later on).

As well, they are rugged enough to not break when dropped, and do not leach chemicals into your beverage.

- Aluminum

Aluminum water bottles behave very much the same as stainless steel. There is little flavour left over, and they are rugged enough to withstand dropping.

Sigg is the most visible manufacturer of Aluminum sports water bottles, and they have marketed their line in many different fun colors and designs.

Recently, it was discovered that the liner of Sigg bottles made before August 2008 had an internal liner made of BPA – while the new bottles have a liner without BPA, it is still an indication that one must do proper research before purchasing sports water bottles
