Looking for a metal water bottle?

They’re
great to carry your water, and recent reports have claimed that they’re
safer than drinking from plastic bottles – especially the disposable
ones found in stores.

Here’s a quick overview of the best on the market

- Klean Kanteen

Kleen Kanteen bottles are made of stainless steel, making them easy to clean and easy to take care of.

Stainless steel is known to not hold odors and is easy to clean. As well, it’s dishwasher safe.

I normally carry a Klean Kanteen metal water bottle with me when I’m out for the day – it’s a great water bottle to carry with me!

- Sigg

Sigg
bottles are aluminum. I’ve found that Sigg bottles normally have
different fun patterns on them, and give the “designer” in you more
selection.

If you’re looking for variety, Sigg is a great brand to work with.

As
the inside of the bottle is a special liner, the inside is not
necessarily aluminum. As of August 2008, it is a BPA (a chemical found
in some plastics that is reported to be very bad for your health) free
liner.

In my personal experience, both the Klean Kanteen and
Sigg have stood up to a number of drops, falls, and mistakes in the
times that I’ve had them.

As a summary of differences, Siggs
normally give you a wider choice of variety, while Kleen Kanteens,
being made of stainless steel, should retain less odors and textures
from various liquids you place in them.

When using a metal water bottle, always make sure you are cleaning it on a regular basis – regardless of the brand.

This will prevent bacteria buildup, as well as reduce abrasions on the inside.

It’s
also important to make sure that you have more than one handy – keep a
few around the house so you won’t get caught out when one or two need
to be cleaned.

Looking for a great bike water bottle that is BPA free and portable, but don’t know where to turn?

Not
only does Klean Kanteen make great water bottles, with the right
accessories, they can also be turned into a bike water bottle!

When
I initially considered my Klean Kanteen for bicycling, I was a little
skeptical – I wanted something that could be portable and easy to work
with.

I normally liked squeeze bottles – but now I don’t like using anything plastic because of the problems with BPA leaching.

That’s when I found out that Klean Kanteen has two great accessories for bikers:

- Klean Kanteen Sport Cap 2.0

This is a great advancement in sport caps!

The
Sport Cap 2.0 is designed to increase the flow of water – this means
that you’re not spending half the day with your head up trying to get
water!

With the cap on, a whole 27 ounce bottle can be drained in under 15 seconds, sometimes as fast as 10 once you get used to it.

It keeps tight to the bottle – no leaks or extra water coming out.

This turns the Klean Kanteen from a mid range bike water bottle compared
with squeeze bottles to an out of the gate performer – it’s difficult
to compete as even squeeze bottles need to fill up with air to
replenish.

- Klean Kanteen Water Bottle Bike Cage for 27-Ounce Bottles

Fit this onto your bike and you’ll be ready to haul your water with you!

Installation is a snap, and it’s custom made by Klean Kanteen for their line of 27 ounce bottles.

- Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle Shoulder Sling (27-Ounce-Bottles)

Don’t like to put your bottle in a rack?

The shoulder sling is a great way to carry your bike water bottle as
well – I personally prefer this method as it gives me quicker access to
my water, and if I’m doing anything non-biking (like hiking) it makes
life easier

Whenever you’re somewhere where using your hands can be useful, but want to keep your water close, this is a great option.

Going for a hike or walk, out on in the woods, on the beach, or in the mountains?

The
most critical part of staying healthy is staying hydrated. Water gives
our bodies energy, carries nutrients across our systems, and ensures
that we arrive at our destination safely and in the best health.

When
hiking, it’s always important to bring a water supply – here are some
tips on how to make sure you’re properly taken care of.

- Fill Up Before You Go

Just like you fill up the gas tank in your car, make sure that you’re properly equipped with sports water bottles and that they’re filled.

Even
if you know of a nearby stream or lake where you can refill on the way,
it’s always best to have a full supply when you leave – In nature,
things can change all of a sudden, and you never know if, because of an
accident that you can’t make it to the stream, or for some reason the
stream’s water becomes polluted, that you may not be able to fill up
your supply.

- Carry More Than You’ll Need

Normally for people traveling, I advise them to bring less – less equipment, less clothing, less supplies.

Too many times, we over pack and pay the price by hauling more weight and taking more time to organize.

There are a few exceptions to this, however, and water is one of the most important.

Even around the house, I always have a few extra sports water bottles to be able to simply better manage the washing cycles.

Have more water on board than you’ll need for your trip, and you’ll have a better safety cushion in the event of an emergency.

- Purify?

Purification is a big question, and the answer revolves around where you’ll be traveling.

You
should always carry iodine tablets, however use them only if you think
it is necessary (also find out if you’re allergic beforehand instead of
the hard way!)

A portable water filter can be worthwhile investment for multiple-day trips.

- Bring soap

Washing out your sports water bottles is a good way to ensure that they keep you clean and healthy.

Bringing washing supplies along will help you scrub any bacteria and dirt out of your containers.

I think I used to be addicted to bottled water.

The kind you buy in a store, encased in plastic, often coming in packs of 24.

These bottles of water look so sanitary – they look like they’re delicately put together, with the cleanest, purest water.

However, the Environmental Working Group has recently found that some of these bottled water manufacturers create products that may be dangerous to your health.

Potentially cancerous materials, including radioactive isotopes, heavy metals, and household waste like caffeine and Tylenol were found in bottles of water.

The full report can be found at http://www.ewg.org/reports/bottledwater

There have been other reports in the news such as this, reporting on leaching plastic to different problems in bottled water.

It’s because of this information that I’ve changed to drinking tap water with sports water bottles.

The need to stay hydrated is unquestionable – the benefit of drinking water has been well documented, and personally I try to drink the recommended eight glasses a day.

My tap water may not be perfect – there are often some contaminants in drinking water systems.

However, I can go to my city and ask for a report on the water – it’s tested annually and I can get a full report of what it is I’m drinking.

If I’m not happy with my city report, I can take the water from my tap to a lab that will measure anything in it.

If I find that my water isn’t good quality, I can get a commercial grade water cooler – the kind with 5 gallon tanks – that is often more tested than conventional store bought bottled water.

Another alternative is to buy a water filtration system for your house or apartment – I’ve seen many systems that will cost justify within a year’s use.

I also keep a good number of sports water bottles around the house to ensure that when one is empty or in the dishwasher, I’m able to always have a clean one to use.

With proper planning and research, it’s easy to determine what the best way to get the best quality water into your body is.

For an overview of plastics and their classifications, a great resource is:

info on plastics – plastics are pretty much everywhere. disposable food containers and grocery bags are the ones you hear a lot about needing to green, but they are present in pretty much every facet of our lives. tooth brushes, dishes, clothing, wallets, …

Looking to cut down on waste, but still have the convenience of a disposable water bottle?

The convenience of disposables can’t be beat – just drink it and toss it – there’s nothing more to really think about!

I’ve been a long time fan of the Platypus Collapsible Water Bottle - and the convenience from them has really paid off!

While
I primarily keep a system of stainless steel sports water bottles for
my regular use, I have to say that having my Platypus around has come
in very handily!

- Safe

They’re BPA Free!

Not
containing the potentially harmful chemical Bisphenol A – known to
leach from plastics into food and beverages means that I know that I’m
healthy with this bottle.

- Convenient

When I’m done with
mine, I just roll it up it and put it into my back pocket – it fits in
there conveniently, taking up little space.

I’ve seen other people toss this collapsible water bottle it into their gym bags, and backpack – just roll it up when you’re done and you’ll forget it’s there!

- Carry more water

Being
able to carry multiple bottles has been a blessing for me – being able
to store two or three while I travel is a wonderful advantage to have!

- Rugged

The Platypus is able to be boiled or frozen – making it able to stand up to the elements with no problem!

On hot days and year round, hydration is essential to staying healthy.

Here are some quick tips to ensure that you’re properly hydrated.

- When should you be drinking water?

Any time you’re thirsty! (as the quick answer)

Thirst is your body’s way of telling you that you need water. Not
listening to your body’s reaction is a quick way to become dehydrated.

There are other symptoms of being thirsty, as well.

Feeling dizzy or disoriented can be a sign that you’re lacking fluids.

Often this is accompanied by headaches or nausea.

If your urine appears dark or has a strong odor, that can also be a sign that you’re not receiving the proper level of fluids.

- How can you drink water more often?

Carry sports water bottles. These will allow you to have water at home or on the road.

Personally, I keep a number of them around the house – this makes it
easier at time when I need to wash or clean one, and I’m never lacking
a water container.

Keep a cold pitcher of water in the fridge. This way you’ll always have cold water ready.

Supplement water with a proper diet consisting of vegetables and
fruits. These foods will help keep you properly hydrated through the
day.

- What to look for in sports water bottles?

Focus on your needs as well as where you’ll be using your sports water bottles.

Personally, I prefer to use Stainless Steel or Aluminum Sports Water Bottles - even for athletic events.

Plastic bottles are almost as rigid as stainless steel, and no longer offer a “squish factor” if you fall on them.

As well, many manufacturers of Stainless Steel and Aluminum Sports
Water Bottles now offer different tops and caps for different sports
occasions.

Before making a purchase, focus on your needs and your lifestyle
choices – this will help you determine the right set of sports water
bottles for you.

Choosing the right sports water bottles is a critical decision.

A balance between cost and effectiveness, here is a summary of the different types.

- Plastic / Polycarbonate

Plastic / Polycarbonate reusable water bottles are a familiar sight at gyms and with hikers. These sports water bottles are known to be portable and easy to clean, and can be brought almost anywhere.

There has been, in recent news evidence that BPA (Bisphenol A), a harmful chemical can leach out of these bottles, causing prostate cancer, and increase estrogen levels.

Some athletes prefer these under the belief that they have a little more “give” when playing rugged sports, however most metal sports water bottles are fairly dent resistant, and some (like Klean Kanteen) have sport tops to ensure that you don’t crack your teeth against a metal.

- Stainless Steel

In my opinion, Stainless Steel is the best option for Sports Water Bottle. I’m personally a fan of the Klean Kanteen line.

Stainless steel is a great as it prevents the taste of different liquids permanently staying in the bottle (so you don’t get the taste of juice when you’re drinking water later on).

As well, they are rugged enough to not break when dropped, and do not leach chemicals into your beverage.

- Aluminum

Aluminum water bottles behave very much the same as stainless steel. There is little flavour left over, and they are rugged enough to withstand dropping.

Sigg is the most visible manufacturer of Aluminum sports water bottles, and they have marketed their line in many different fun colors and designs.

Recently, it was discovered that the liner of Sigg bottles made before August 2008 had an internal liner made of BPA – while the new bottles have a liner without BPA, it is still an indication that one must do proper research before purchasing sports water bottles

If you’re looking for more information, there are some other great posts with these resources:

Our bodies are made of 50-65% water.

Replenishing this reserve is essential for maintaining ourselves, maintaining a health lfiestyle, and keeping our internal organs in proper shape.

Being properly hyrdated means that our bodies have less work to do. Our blood is thinner, and circulates more easily through our system. Our bodies have to do less work to remove water from food and beverages to replace it into our system.

Water allows our bodies to properly eliminate waste – helping with weight loss and staying regular.

Complexion is imporved with proper water intake, and and reduce acne and blemishes on the skin.

Through the day, the value of staying hydrated cannot be overexadgerated – whether we’re in a humid tropical location or dry cold one, it’s important to keep a regular supply of water going into our bodies.

I personally find it’s easiest to do this by keeping about 10 sports water bottles around the house. This way, even on the busiest of weeks, I’m never caught short for water if I have a few in the dishwasher.

I checked with the quality of water in my area, and it is very good quality water with few toxins in it (less than what you’d find in bottled water). If this wasn’t the case, I’d install a water purifier or have a service bring in the commercial sized bottles to refill with.

I checked the financial numbers and both of these options result in less cost than purchasing bottled water from the grocery store, with better quality water.

My health has improved, I have less energy, and going for a walk with a sports water bottle in the evenings has helped me suppress the food cravings I get a few hours before I go to bed.

It’s surprising to think that there’s a way to become more healthy AND save money, but I have to say that I’ve had success with it!

Many users of sports water bottles have asked us why their tap water appears white.

The appearance of a white milky colour in tap water is usually air bubbles coming out of solution of the water.

When cold water (as is found in most taps) heats up to room temperature, it is unable to hold as much gas, and as it comes out of solution makes a white colour.

If you still want to be sure that it is air that is in the water, fill a clean glass with tap water and place it on a table.

If the white colour clears from the bottom and moves upwards, it is just the air moving out of the solution.

If on the other hand, it remains milky for a long period of time, or dissolves through the whole system, it would be advised to have your water checked. If the white colour clears from the top and moves down, it could indicate hardness salts in your water.

It’s important to ensure that the water you drink on a daily basis and in your sports water bottles is coming from a clear source.

More information on this can be found at the Massachusetts Water Authority (http://www.mwra.com/04water/2004/whitewater.htm) and United Utilities (http://www.unitedutilities.com/Whitewater.htm)

The most important part of keeping a water bottle is to ensure that it is properly cleaned and maintained.

Not properly maintaining sport water bottles will lead to the development of mold and bacteria, and cause bad tasting water and possibly sickness.

Here we will show you how to clean and maintain your bottle.

Dishwashers

As sport water bottles are often made of plastic, it is very important to ensure that they are considered “dishwasher safe” before purchasing – putting an item that is not safe in the dishwasher can contaminate all the dishes in the wash at that time and is definitely NOT advised.

Disposable plastic water bottles purchased with water in them at the grocery store should not reused frequently – they are a haven for bacteria, and are not constructed to be exposed to the high temperatures in the dishwasher (and to answer the question, no, most dishwashers do not have a “cold wash mode” like a laundry machine).

Full Clean

While a dishwasher will often properly clean out reusable sports water bottles, it is important that a more vigorous cleaning also takes place on a regular basis.

On top of a dishwasher rinse after every use, we recommend a full clean about every 10 uses per bottle, or once a month.

The best way is to use a combination of 3 parts hot water, and 1 part white vinegar. Let the solution sit overnight, and then put the water bottle through the dishwasher afterwards to rinse the vinegar out.

The best way to properly manage this scenario is to have multiple water bottles – this way a proper “cleaning” can take place without lacking your sports water bottle.

Storage – Freeze your water bottle

When not in use, the best place for your water bottle is the freezer (do not leave water in it while doing this) – leaving it here will prevent the growth of mold and bacteria.

Leave the cap off

When storing, leave the cap off of the water bottle.
